Success Stories

Imperial Court, Odessa Street, London, SE16

Imperial Court is a modern development of luxury riverside apartments overlooking the River Thames in Rotherhithe, southeast London. We originally represented a number of residents in appealing their Council Tax band to the Valuation Tribunal in 2022. Following the successful outcome of those appeals, we have negotiated reductions on a number of other properties in the development. Following our involvement, over 40 of the 55 flats have now benefitted from a reduction in Council Tax band, and we continue to represent some of the remaining residents in pursuing a reduction.

Yew Tree Close, Lapworth, Solihull, West Midlands

We identified discrepancies in the Council Tax bandings applied to this 1990’s-built estate in the village of Lapworth, on the outskirts of Solihull. We successfully appealed the Council Tax bands of the affected properties on behalf of the owners, bringing them in line with the rest of the estate, and with the property owners receiving substantial backdated refunds of Council Tax.

Quantock House, Paul Street, Taunton, Somerset

Quantock House is a luxury new-build development of retirement apartments on the outskirts of Taunton town centre. The one-bedroom apartments were originally assessed in Band E, and the two-bedroom apartments in Band F. Appeals against these assessments were originally refused by the Valuation Office Agency, and we took a small number of cases to the Valuation Tribunal for determination. The Tribunal found in our favour, following which we successfully negotiated reductions on the remaining properties with the Valuation Office Agency. As a result, the one-bedroom apartments have now been reduced to Band D, with the two-bedroom apartments being reduced to Band E.

The Rowans, Godley, Hyde, Cheshire

The Rowans is a 1990’s-built development of executive-style detached houses in Godley, a suburb of Hyde in Cheshire. Our research identified a number of inconsistencies in the Council Tax bandings originally applied to this development, and we have successfully assisted both current and former owners in appealing their Council Tax banding. Many of the residents on this development have lived there since it was first built in the early 1990’s, with some having received refunds in excess of £8,000 as a result of our successful appeals. In addition, these residents are also now saving in the region of £500 per year, following the reduction in band.

Fulford Court and Stone Mill Court, Park Terrace, Minehead, Somerset

Our investigations identified inconsistencies in the Council Tax bandings applied to these two adjoining blocks of McCarthy and Stone retirement flats, in Minehead, Somerset. Following appeals to the Valuation Office Agency on behalf of the affected residents, we successfully negotiated reductions in the Council Tax bands, with one-bedroom properties being reduced from Band C to Band B, and two-bedroom properties being reduced from Band D to Band C.

Carlton Court, Blenheim Road, Minehead, Somerset

Following our successful appeals in respect of Fulford Court and Stone Mill Court, we successfully argued that the Council Tax bandings applied to this McCarthy and Stone retirement development in central Minehead should also be reduced. This resulted in all 42 flats being reduced by one Council Tax band, and with many residents receiving sizeable refunds.

Richmond Wood Norton, Evesham, Worcestershire

Built in 2019, Richmond Wood Norton is a luxury development of retirement apartments, featuring both independent and assisted living options. Built by specialist housing provider Richmond Villages, the development is located in the village of Wood Norton, around two miles from Evesham, and features communal facilities including a swimming pool, gym, spa, hair salon, as well as a resident’s bar, restaurant and cinema. The properties range from smaller-sized ‘suites’, through to substantial two-bedroom two-bathroom apartments. The properties were originally assessed in Council Tax bands E to G, however we have successfully negotiated reductions on 97 of the 109 individual flats, with properties now ranging from bands C to F, and with many of our clients having benefited from a reduction of two Council Tax bands.

Marston Fields, Marston Moretaine, Bedford

We were instructed by the owner of a substantial new-build five-bedroom executive home on the new Marston Fields development in Marston Moretaine. The Valuation Office Agency refused to alter the band from its original Band G assessment, however we took the case to the Valuation Tribunal, where we successfully argued that Band G was excessive, and obtained a reduction to Band F. We have since secured reductions on similar sized detached properties in the local area.

Greenwood Valley, Hednesford, Staffordshire

We were originally instructed by the owner of a new-build detached house on the Greenwood Valley development in Hednesford, Staffordshire. It was necessary to take the case to the Valuation Tribunal, whereby we secured a reduction in the Council Tax band from Band E to Band D. Following this decision, we successfully appealed numerous similar properties on the Greenwood Valley development, as well as other similar properties on neighbouring new-build developments, including Bilberry Chase, and The Limes.
